From mid-April, we open the doors of our seasonal store every year — the moment when Kwekerij Duineveld gets itchy again.
A garden full of color isn't just beautiful in spring — with the right perennials, you can ensure a thriving garden from April until well into autumn. In this blog, we'll show you how to cleverly combine perennials for long-lasting and vibrant results. And the great thing: you only have to plant once!
What are perennials?
Perennials come back every year. In winter, they often disappear underground, but as soon as it gets warmer, they sprout again. Ideal for those who want to enjoy an easy-care and permanent green garden.
3 golden combinations for a season full of color
🌸 Spring: Lady's Mantle & Lungwort
- Lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis) forms soft, green pollen with yellow-green flowers.
- Lungwort (Pulmonaria) blooms early with purple and pink flowers and attracts bees.
Combination tip: Plant them together as a ground cover at the edge of a border. They complement each other nicely and flower early in the season.
🌼 Summer: Sage & Echinacea
- Salvia nemorosa blooms for a long time with purple blossoms and smells great.
- Echinacea (Coneflower) is a real eye-catcher with large pink, white or orange flowers.
Combination tip: Place them together in the middle of the border for structure, color and insect fun. Butterflies love it!
🍂 Autumn: Autumn Anemone & Ornamental Grasses
- Autumn anemone (Anemone hupehensis) blooms profusely from August, often well into October.
- Ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum provide movement and softness in autumn.
Combination tip: Combine them in the back of the garden for an attractive autumn image that keeps structure even in the winter.
Extra tips for color all year round:
- Think in layers: Use low ground covers, mid-height bloomers, and tall accents.
- Note flowering time: Choose plants that follow each other in terms of flowering, so you don't have 'empty months'.
- Work with contrast: Combine fine flowers with large leaves, cool colors with warm tones.
